The Three Lions to Start Euro 2028 Campaign at the Etihad Stadium
The English squad will embark on their UEFA Euro 2028 adventure at the Manchester City’s stadium, assuming they secure the anticipated passage for a competition staged throughout the bulk of Britain and the Republic of Ireland.
Manchester City’s home ground has not staged an England men’s fixture since eight years ago, when the Turkish team were defeated 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is expected to stage the England side for their first match on a Saturday in June 2028.
The team are planned to play their final two group matches at Wembley, but, if they top their group, their knockout stage opener would occur at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Placing second would mean commencing the knockouts at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Tournament Opening and Demonstration
The event was launched at an ceremony in central London on the previous evening. Key representatives from Uefa and the organizing bodies were heckled as they approached the venue by approximately 50 protesters, who demanded Israel to be expelled from the sport because of the conflict in Gaza.
Signs were raised with slogans saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Fixture List
The first match of the tournament will be held at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital, on Friday 9 June, a fixture that will feature Wales if they secure a place.
Wembley will host the penultimate rounds and the final, which will be held on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at 5:00 PM.
It is expected that an afternoon start, which will also be adopted for European club finals from the following campaign, will appeal to family audiences and help reach a wider spectrum of fans.
Qualifying Teams
The Republic of Ireland are set to play their initial fixture at the Dublin stadium and Scotland would follow suit at the national stadium of Scotland.
Each host nation’s squad will enter the qualification process; two automatic spots will be set aside for any that miss out on the tournament through the qualification path.
Stadiums and Knockout Stage
Aston Villa’s stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium complete the nine host stadiums. Every stadium will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the last eight held at the national stadium of each host.
The draw for the qualifiers will be conducted in Belfast, which was excluded as a venue city last year when it became clear the Belfast stadium could not be upgraded in time, on 6 December 2026.
Official Statement
“This will be a championship for the followers and a showcase of everything we love about the sport – its emotion and power to foster unity.”
In excess of three million admissions, a unprecedented number for a UEFA European Championship, are expected to be made available to supporters.
