People have gathered throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted attack on 7 October 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in Gaza.

The attack resulted in more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the most deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.

"The violent adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on that day.

He also vowed to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer present a danger to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government postponed state memorials until October 16th - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still took place across the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the relatives of people killed in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was aired across Israeli broadcast stations.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held around the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' representatives convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the proposal.

A senior delegate knowledgeable about the discussions indicated that an night meeting of indirect talks began at 7 PM local time.

The representative explained the earlier meeting concluded without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the agreement.

He commented that the talks are "challenging and have not yet produce any major advancement," but pointed out that mediators are striving to reduce the gaps between the conflicting groups.

Critical Matters in Discussions

  • A permanent ceasefire
  • The swap of the captives still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid distribution
  • Future administration of the region

Public Sentiment

In the city's public square previously, young Hagar - whose family member survived the attack on the outdoor event, where 378 people were lost their lives and dozens more were abducted by Hamas militants - shared: "No place appears as home now and until all the hostages are released not a single person will be secure."

"After we see everyone home once more, we can relax again. Then we can begin to rebuild," she added.

Outside the leader's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their support for the families of the abducted. Israel reports 48 stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be surviving.

Demonstrator one woman remarked: "We need do any agreement necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we truly desire assurances that we will be safe."

Research now regularly indicate that approximately seventy percent of Israelis want the war to end in return for the freedom of the captives.

Gaza Situation

At the location of the music event, mourners came together to honor the dead.

From that location, the noise of military attacks and shelling could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli bombardment continued.

In Gaza City, attacks were documented in the morning of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and Nasr districts and in the east side neighbourhood of that sector, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"As the night falls, the anxiety comes with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli bombing earlier, shared.

"We are afraid of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, particularly my youngest child who puts his head on me all night."

"Continuously we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be achieved and that the conflict will come back to us."

Humanitarian Situation

The medical facility in Gaza City said it had received the bodies of six people by the midday, including several who died in an Israeli attack in the southern district.

Another medical facility in the southern city of Khan Younis said another two dead people had been brought there. An individual was lost his life by Israeli troops while seeking aid to the south, medics stated.
