The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... For Now.

Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would become a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

As the debut season of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the creative team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.

About the Overwhelming Audience Reaction

One could easily to get distracted by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.

“It feels like force fed something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it from others, and that's by design. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We don't try to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by online forums.”

“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.

The Big Question: Does the showrunner Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?

Considering Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by fan response, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… with some caveats.

“There are some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to discard a good idea for a better idea. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”

On the other hand, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.

“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”

Of course, one could always use the classics?

“I want Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
