The Australian Team Remains Tight-Lipped on Second Ashes Test XI, Possibility Still Open for Cummins’ Comeback

The playing eleven for the next Test match remains unknown just hours out from the first ball in Brisbane, with a further inspection of the playing surface needed before the hosts finalize a side that might include the fast bowler.

Stand-in Captain Smith Hints at Possibility for Shock Recall

Vice-captain Steve Smith addressed an journalists on the eve of the Test but was not disclosing the final selection of the lineup. However, he did not rule out a shock return for Cummins, who was ruled out of the first Test due to a back issue.

“He has appeared pretty good to me, the way he’s been bowling in practice,” the stand-in captain stated. “Naturally the game is different, but he’s progressing very well, he knows his body well.”

Late Inclusion Remains a Live Option

The quick was originally omitted in Australia’s extended squad for the Brisbane Test, but came along to the Gabba to continue his recovery with the rest of the squad. Smith said he was on the right track and may be included at the final moment.

“We’ll wait and see but like I said, he’s near,” Smith continued. “He’s done all the right things the past few days and we’ll see after three o’clock when we look at that wicket whether he’s an option or not.”

Selection Conundrums Ahead if Cummins Returns

A return to the side for Cummins, which seemed improbable just a few days ago, would mean recent Test player Brendan Doggett or even experienced spinner Nathan Lyon being omitted.

Smith would not confirm Lyon’s place in the team when questioned about the spinner's inclusion.

“Uncertain,” he replied. “We need to examine the pitch as I said and sum things up from there. This is a ground Nathan has performed brilliantly in the history, he’s a quality bowler. We will consider the choices and see how we go.”

Batsmen Awaiting Selection

The wicketkeeper-batter will also have to find out whether he has been selected. The player is the frontrunner to be included in place of the unfit Usman Khawaja, with Travis Head likely to take the opening spot again after his brilliant performance in the first Test.

“Many options are being discussed,” Smith said. “We’ll wait and see what the wicket is like and from there we’ll decide on a final team.”

“[Inglis] is clearly a pretty attacking player,” Smith added. “Did really well on his first Test in Sri Lanka, he’s been in excellent touch... He plays fast bowling exceptionally. So if he gets his opportunity I’m sure he’ll do really well for us.”

Last-Minute Decision Pending

In addition to Inglis, Beau Webster is in the mix to earn a recall at number six, on the assumption that Travis Head opens the batting alongside the other opener, and Cam Green shifts to number five.

Smith said a final decision on the team is possible before the day ends, but alternatively, it may wait until the morning of the Test. Play starts at the Gabba at two in the afternoon (3pm AEDT) on Thursday.
