Resurgent Medvedev Wins First Championship in Over Two Years
19 of Medvedev's 21 championships have been achieved on hard courts
A revitalized Daniil Medvedev won his initial trophy for 882 days with a win over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open final.
The athlete, a former world number one, has experienced a torrid year, managing just one win at the big events and experiencing a meltdown at the US Open.
Medvedev's inconsistency on the professional circuit - and issues with his serve in particular - resulted in him exiting of the world's top 10 and eventually parting ways with former mentor his previous coach.
Presently working with Johansson and Goetzke, the tennis star has steadily advanced in the last few weeks - peaking in a hard-fought three-set triumph over Frenchman Moutet.
It is his first trophy after the Rome competition and maiden on a hardcourt since March of the previous year.
Success also means he has secured twenty-one victories at 21 different events.
"For the first time I'm at a tournament with my two daughters together, so to get a trophy is particularly special," stated ranked player the champion.
"This victory is in tribute of my child Victoria, because the initial championship I got when my child my daughter was born was for her."
The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his last six finals, featuring in Halle earlier this year.
Medvedev's defensive approach and recurring reactions on court had led observers to doubt if his capacity to perform at the top level was finished.
Yet the athlete has implemented adjustments in the last few weeks, making an effort to approach the net and perform positively, reinforced by an enhanced service.
The champion recovered from a deficit in the first set against the tricky opponent, securing four of the final five points to go ahead.
The competitors exchanged breaks in the second set before Moutet, bidding for his first professional victory, seized the initiative to push for a third set.
He defended 4 initial break points in a close final set before the champion won the break to fifteen to serve for the match.
Suitably, he clinched victory with a shot at the net area, with the Frenchman failing to control a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
