Meteorologists have indicated a frosty commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating are advised to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Festive Events Go Ahead Amid Warnings
Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay celebrations are expected to go ahead, following last year's postponement. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so extra layers will be necessary," said the national forecaster.
Fireworks Under Clear but Chilly Skies
Across the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and clear skies. Readings are expected to be low, making extra layers vital, as per forecasters.
Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Heading into Friday, snow alerts are active for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Expected to Fall Further

About 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Medical Warnings Released
In addition, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
