Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
