Jurgen Klopp says a return to coach Liverpool is theoretically possible.
The German coach, who stepped down from Liverpool in 2024, indicated that a future comeback remains an option. Klopp, post a game-changing nine-season tenure which brought a European Cup triumph and the Reds’ first league title for three decades, has since taken on positions overseeing worldwide football with the Red Bull group and in an advisory capacity for the DFL.
Supporters’ Hopes and His Frank Comments
The club claimed England's top flight last season, though countless followers who revere Klopp would be thrilled by the idea that he may eventually return. During an extensive chat, he shared with his interviewer: “I said I will never coach a different club on English soil. Which implies in case it's my former club...yeah. It's plausible.”
“At 58 years old, that means I could make the decision in a few years, I don’t know. Must I choose now? In that case, I'd stay away. Fortunately, it's not necessary. I'll simply watch what the future brings.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
When asked about which situations would have to unfold to bring him back to management, Klopp admitted he feels no immediate pull for a comeback. “It's unclear to me, My present work fulfills me,” he said. “I don't crave being a coach; I avoid standing in the rain for two-and-a-half or three hours; I'm glad to skip interviews repeatedly each week or constant media duties weekly.
“The locker room isn't missed in that context, however, dining out with the players talking freely, that’s nice. We won a lot of games so there was often great spirits in the building. Remaining with me is the captain's chuckle ringing in my ears as an instance.”
Praise for His Successor
He commended for his successor, praising him for the adjustments that took the title in the previous season. The team has suffered four in a row in all competitions post heavy investment, but he rubbished the notion that it might signal the start of a downward turn.
“[Liverpool have] a top-class attacker such as Wirtz, you will all eat your words if spoken against. A remarkable prospect. Ekitike, incredible player. They have a strong thoughtfully assembled roster. No need for concern about Liverpool, they will be fine.”
Heartfelt Words for Diogo Jota
Klopp also spoke emotionally on the loss of the Portuguese star, a 2020 acquisition during his tenure, and the effect at the club. Jota lost his life in a road accident alongside his brother recently.
“How do you replace such an individual? It goes beyond his footballing ability, it’s the guy he was. I struggle to conceive the squad without him in it. Putting it into words is tough on this topic. It was an incredible shock for all the boys as well. Nobody at Liverpool might employ it for poor performances yet it's the reality. Entering the changing area where his spirit remains. Coping with it individually is challenging. Unbearable.”
