From Acclaim to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Epstein Document Disclosure is Mixed.
Conservative responses to the partial release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious concerns about what may be hidden behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Figures Rally Behind the Release
But, a segment of conservative commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely censored, and many of the men shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But a few do not, including prominent figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, enabled some rightwing figures to go on the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of no criminal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding these files for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Conservative Commentary Seems Subdued
However, broader comment on the right was comparatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that came before the legislative vote to enact a law mandating the files' release.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were provided physical binders of files that included no new data.
