Eurovision Used to Be a Campy Joy – However It Has Become a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.

A freshly coined term surfaced a few months into the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is found only in Gaza, according to doctors such as paediatricians. Normally, it is uncommon for physicians to care for a minor who has lost their entire family. But, there has been nothing “normal” about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary about many doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that violations are continuing. The Israeli government rejects these allegations, just as it refutes each claim it is accused of. But while young survivors are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, apparently, is what international harmony looks like.

The contest, notably banned Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that global media are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Profound Human Cost

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it historically embodied. An institution that once promoted togetherness has devolved into a cynical way to whitewash war.
