Arrangements for Trump-Putin Talks Delayed Days After Hungarian Capital Talks Suggested

There are "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has announced.

This past week Trump said he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Hungary's capital soon to address the Ukraine conflict.

A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "productive" discussion and that a meeting was no longer "necessary".

The administration withheld any more details on why the talks had been put on hold.

Previous Developments

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit during a call with Putin, a day before hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Certain accounts suggested his talks with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with sources suggesting the president had pressured him to relinquish large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a agreement with Russia.

Nevertheless, on this week Trump supported a peace initiative endorsed by Kyiv and European leaders to halt the war on the present positions.

"Let it be cut where it stands," he stated.

Moscow has consistently objected against freezing the current line of contact.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "long-term, sustainable peace", Lavrov commented on Tuesday, suggesting that halting hostilities would simply constitute a short-term truce.

Political Perspectives

The "fundamental issues" of the war demanded attention, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Moscow's terminology for a set of comprehensive conditions that include the acceptance of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a non-starter for Kyiv and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president stated discussions about the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to prevent dialogue.

He also said the sole subject that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the provision of extended-range arms to Ukraine.

Strategic Factors

The Russian president's unscheduled call with Trump recently occurred before reports that the US was preparing to send extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The conversation concerning the missiles had turned out to be a "strong investment" in international relations", he added.
